The 2013 Hyundai Veloster will get a turbo to help increase its power figures

It was announced last week at the NAIAS that Hyundai’s ugly duckling the Veloster will receive a new engine option for the 2013 model year.  This will mean that when you now purchase this restyled Accent and drive it home you can finally run away from onlookers who will no doubt be laughing and pointing at your fugly car.

2013 Hyundai Veloster Turbo - Front 3/4

The 2013 Veloster crapster turbo will be available for you to purchase in August of this year and will feature a forced induction version of the standard 1.6-liter direct injected inline 4-cylinder engine under the hood.  No word on what kind of boost the turbo will be dialed up to however we can confirm that it will be producing a hair over 200 hp and 195 lb-ft of torque.  The twin-scroll turbocharger is cleverly contained within a housing in the exhaust manifold.  This design is said to improve throttle response and promote lower combustion chamber temperatures and is employed alongside a compact side-by side intercooler.

This restyles accent will feature the same 6-speed manual and 6-speed automatic transmissions as the naturally aspirated version of the car.  It will also feature a quicker ratio steering rack in addition to a unique full face front grille, redesigned front bumper with new fog lights, side skirts and a new rear bumper with oval tailpipes.

2013 Hyundai Veloster Turbo - Rear 3/4

Unfortunately the Veloster’s achilles heel was not addressed and it will continue to employee the same ridiculously soft suspension.  So if you are driving in a sporty fashion with someone else in the car, be sure to provide them with some motion sickness pills or they may just end up tossing their cookies all over your new bespoke turbo interior.  The car also will not gain any rear seat head room so that even if you can push your 2nd passenger through the ridiculously small rear door found only on the passenger side of the car they will need to be 5”7’ or smaller so be able to sit up straight.

2013 Hyundai Veloster Turbo - Side Profile

It is safe to say that you will never see one of these cars in my driveway however we do have to commend Hyundai for creating a vehicle and then quickly readdressing some of its short comings so quickly after its launch.  It’s just too bad in our option, the areas in which the car is still lacking have yet to be corrected.  Engine power was one of the three big ones, however not they just have to improve the handling and rear seat comfort before we can over look the hideous rear end and silly 3 door design.

Fortunately you don’t have to take our words for it as we will let you make up your own minds about the new 2013 Hyundai Veloster with its new torque turbo engine.  Check back in with us later as we will continue to bring you more information about more new car releases at the NAIAS as well as an announcement that happened three days after the last NAIAS press days.
